A Mesquita Makhmud Kashkari

A Mesquita Makhmud Kashkari

This is a portrait of a place of prayer rather than of a monument. The film approaches the mosque as its congregation does: from the street, through the courtyard, past shoes left at the threshold, into a hall whose proportions and orientation are shaped entirely by the act of worship. The camera dwells on what defines the space — the niche indicating the direction of prayer, the pulpit, the carpets aligning the rows of the faithful, the calligraphic and geometric decoration that stands in for figurative imagery, the quality of daylight through the windows. Around the building, the ordinary life of a Kyrgyz neighbourhood provides the counterpoint: arrivals before prayer, conversations afterwards, the mosque as a social anchor as much as a religious one. Central Asia has seen a visible return of religious practice in recent decades, and this film records one modest expression of it. Filmed in 4K with natural sound throughout.
