Luang Prabang, a Cidade Real

Luang Prabang, a Cidade Real

Luang Prabang occupies a narrow peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and the Nam Khan, hemmed in by hills. That geography preserved it: the town grew slowly, kept its scale, and now presents an urban ensemble inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The film moves through the whole town rather than a single monument — gilded monastery roofs sweeping almost to the ground, timber houses on stilts, shuttered villas and administrative buildings from the French colonial period, and the hill of Phousi rising at the centre with its long stairway and panoramic view. Life here is still ordered by the monasteries: the pre-dawn alms round, when saffron-robed monks file past kneeling residents, remains the town's defining image. Riverbanks, ferries and markets complete the portrait. Filmed in 4K including aerial coverage, the programme works as a stand-alone destination film and as an anchor for a Laos series.
