Wat Hosian Voravihane, Luang Prabang

Wat Hosian Voravihane, Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is a town of monasteries, and this film chooses one of them and stays there. It begins outside, with the enclosure wall and the gate that separates the street from the compound, then enters the courtyard: swept earth, frangipani trees, drum tower, monks' quarters, and the ordination hall at the centre with its low sweeping roof. Inside, gilded surfaces, lacquer, mirrored glass mosaic and Buddha images arranged in tiers create the shimmering half-light characteristic of Lao sacred interiors. Rather than narrate, the film observes: the morning departure for alms, robes drying in the sun, the cleaning and small repairs that keep a wooden monastery standing in a monsoon climate, the chanting that closes the day. The monastery belongs to the historic town inscribed on the World Heritage List, and its rhythm is inseparable from that of the community around it. Filmed in 4K with natural sound throughout.
