A Sé de Faro – Parte Dois

A Sé de Faro – Parte Dois

This second episode enters the cathedral of Faro. Inside the Gothic shell, the decoration belongs overwhelmingly to the Baroque campaigns that followed the disasters of the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries: gilded and carved woodwork in the chancel and side chapels, altarpieces of red and gold, and panels of blue and white azulejos, the glazed tiles that are among the most distinctive elements of Portuguese sacred art. An organ decorated in the chinoiserie taste of its period stands above the nave. The chapels each preserve their own devotional world, with painted sculpture, retables and funerary monuments recording the families and confraternities who paid for them. The film also follows the ascent of the tower, from which the whole walled town, the salt pans and the lagoon come into view. Together the two parts form a complete architectural reading of the principal religious monument of the Algarve, filmed in the region's exceptionally clear southern light.
