Dois pagodes do Vietname: Hau e Xa Loi

Dois pagodes do Vietname: Hau e Xa Loi

Vietnamese Buddhism is best understood in the plural, and this film is built on a simple comparison. Two pagodas are filmed in parallel, each with its own scale, setting and congregation, and the programme moves between them so that similarities and differences emerge without commentary. The shared elements are immediately visible: the incense burners at the threshold, the ordered arrangement of the main hall with its tiers of gilded figures, the accumulation of offerings, the sung recitation that fills the space at set hours, the rhythm of arrivals and departures around the working day. The differences are matters of scale, upkeep, the character of the surrounding streets and the age of those who come. Rather than presenting a hierarchy of monuments, the film argues for attention to religious practice as it actually appears in Vietnamese cities. It is deliberately observational, largely wordless and easy to place in contemplative, travel or comparative-religion strands, and can be scheduled alongside other titles in the collection's Vietnamese sacred-sites group.
