ستوبا بودانات

Boudhanath is a machine for devotion. Its vast white dome, mandala-shaped terraces and gilded tower rise from a ring of buildings in eastern Kathmandu, and around it flows an almost unbroken current of pilgrims moving clockwise, turning prayer wheels, murmuring mantras. Above, the painted eyes on each face of the tower have become the emblem of Nepal itself. The stupa is the heart of the Tibetan Buddhist community in the valley, surrounded by monasteries whose monks fill the square at dusk, and its butter lamps, incense and prayer flags give the site its characteristic light and smell. The film also records restoration: the structure was damaged in the earthquake that struck Nepal, and the repair of its upper works was carried out with substantial community participation. Part of the Kathmandu Valley World Heritage property, Boudhanath is filmed here in 4K from ground level, from surrounding rooftops and from the air.
