Not every Thai temple is built to impress. Wat Samret is filmed as one of the many modest compounds where the country's religious life is actually maintained, and the programme is shaped accordingly: no grand claims, no reconstructions, simply close attention to a place and its use. The camera works through the enclosure in stages — the outer wall and its gate, the shaded ground between buildings, the interior where offerings accumulate at the foot of the principal Buddha image and where gold leaf, pressed on by successive hands, gives the surface an uneven shine. Visitors arrive in ones and twos, kneel, light incense and leave; monks pass through the frame without addressing the camera. The film's subject is the persistence of ritual rather than the biography of a monument, and it treats the temple as a space of duration.
