Quanh Than

Quanh Than

Vietnam's devotional landscape is dense and largely unremarked: alongside its famous monuments stand countless sanctuaries whose importance is entirely local and whose upkeep depends on the households around them. This film is made in that register. There is no commentary and no reconstruction, only sustained attention to a single site. The camera watches the threshold, the burning of incense and the smoke that hangs in the still air, the red and gold surfaces of lacquered woodwork catching what light reaches them, the offerings of fruit and flowers renewed and removed, and the visitors who arrive alone or in pairs, perform their gestures and leave without ceremony. Sound is recorded on location: traffic beyond the wall, the tap of a wooden fish, a murmured recitation. The film asks the viewer to slow down and offers a form of access that no explanatory approach can give. It works as a standalone contemplative short and as a companion within a wider collection of Vietnamese sacred sites.
