The White City of Tel Aviv is the built record of a moment when a European architectural revolution was transplanted whole to a Mediterranean shore. Architects trained in the modernist schools of Europe — many of them shaped by the Bauhaus and by the International Style — arrived in the young city and designed for it on an extraordinary scale, producing thousands of buildings in a shared vocabulary: white and cream renders, horizontal ribbon windows, curved balconies, flat roofs, buildings raised on pilotis to let the sea breeze pass beneath. What makes the ensemble exceptional is not any single masterpiece but its coherence and its adaptation: shading devices, deep balconies and orientation to the wind turned a northern European idiom into a genuinely local architecture. Recognised as a World Heritage site, the White City is now the object of a vast restoration effort, boulevard by boulevard.
