Avalokitesvara is one of the most widely venerated figures in Mahayana Buddhism, the bodhisattva who embodies compassion and who is known across East and Southeast Asia under many names and forms - among them Guanyin, the compassionate figure to whom countless sanctuaries are dedicated. This pagoda in Indonesia carries that dedication, and the film approaches it as a living place of devotion. The structure rises in diminishing tiers, each level marked by projecting eaves, with statues and reliefs set into the base and interior. Around it, the ordinary business of a functioning temple continues: incense lit and planted in sand, offerings of fruit and flowers arranged before the images, worshippers bowing and circling, chanting rising and falling. Indonesia's Buddhist communities are a minority within a predominantly Muslim country, and sanctuaries like this one are also markers of a plural society.
