Una chiesa e un monastero greci sul lago di Galilea

Una chiesa e un monastero greci sul lago di Galilea

The Sea of Galilee is ringed with sanctuaries, and the Greek Orthodox tradition holds several of the most striking positions along its shores — places where a wall, a garden and a bell tower stand directly above the water. This film portrays one such house: a church and its monastery, set at the lake's edge, where the liturgical day unfolds against an unbroken horizon of water and hills. The programme is built on observation rather than commentary. It follows the light as it moves across the lake, the care of a garden held between stone and shoreline, the polished brass and painted icons of an Eastern interior, the chanted offices, the ringing of bells across open water, and the arrival of visitors who come and go while the community's routine continues unchanged. Around it, the Galilee appears in its two faces: the tourist lake of boats and pilgrimage buses, and the older, quieter body of water that has drawn hermits and monks for centuries. The result is a contemplative piece, easy to programme alongside sacred-music and slow-television strands.
