Gaza has stood at the crossing point of Egypt, the Levant and the caravan routes for millennia, and its old city preserves the memory of that position in stone. In the Daraj quarter, the Sayed Hashim Mosque is among the largest and most venerated of its historic sanctuaries. Tradition holds that it shelters the tomb of Hashim ibn Abd Manaf, great-grandfather of the Prophet Muhammad and a merchant of Mecca said to have died while travelling in Gaza, a lineage that gave the city a place in the earliest Islamic narratives. Rebuilt in the Ottoman period, the mosque follows a familiar and dignified plan: an open courtyard, a colonnaded prayer hall, a slender minaret rising above the surrounding rooftops. It has served as a place of worship, teaching and gathering for generations of Gazans, and its restraint is precisely what gives it authority.
