Standing just within Jaffa Gate, opposite the Citadel, the church is easy to walk past: a plain facade, a courtyard, a low bell tower. It was the first Anglican church built in Jerusalem, consecrated in the middle of the nineteenth century, at a time when European powers were establishing religious institutions across the city. Its interior is deliberately restrained, with no statues or figurative decoration and with inscriptions in Hebrew above the sanctuary, a choice that says much about the community's understanding of its own place in the city. Around the church, a courtyard, a guesthouse and a small museum occupy the compound. Filmed in 4K, the programme uses the building as an entry point to the nineteenth-century transformation of Jerusalem, when new consulates, hospices and churches reshaped the Old City and its surroundings.
