Tel Be'er Sheva is one of the clearest demonstrations in the region of what ancient urban planning actually looked like. Excavation has exposed almost the whole of an Iron Age town: a fortified perimeter, a gate complex, a street running in a ring just inside the wall with houses backing onto it, a plaza, storehouses and a well at the entrance. Unlike sites that grew organically, this town appears to have been laid out as a single design, and the plan reads instantly from the observation tower or from the air. Its most impressive element lies underground — a water system cut deep into the rock, with a shaft and a plastered reservoir, engineered so that the town could draw water in safety even under siege. Tel Be'er Sheva is inscribed on the World Heritage list as one of the Biblical Tels, recognised for what these mounds reveal about the emergence of urban life in the ancient Near East. Filmed in 4K with aerial coverage and low-light work in the cistern, the programme turns a plan of stone foundations into a legible, inhabited city.
