Mongolian Buddhism was all but erased in the twentieth century: monasteries were destroyed, monks killed or laicised, and religious life driven underground. Gandantegchinlen survived that period in reduced form and became, after the political changes of the early 1990s, the engine of a national revival. The monastery occupies a hill above Ulaanbaatar, a compound of temples, colleges and courtyards where pigeons wheel over crowds of worshippers. Its centrepiece is a colossal gilded statue of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, standing the full height of its purpose-built hall — a replacement for an earlier image lost in the destruction, and a deliberate statement of continuity. The film records the monastic day: dawn assemblies, deep-toned chanting and horns, prayer wheels turned by lay visitors, young monks in training, and the debates and ceremonies that make Gandan an active teaching institution rather than a relic.
