無原罪の御宿り小バシリカ

無原罪の御宿り小バシリカ

Marian devotion runs through Philippine Catholicism, and the churches dedicated to the Immaculate Conception occupy a particular place in it, elevated by Rome to the rank of minor basilica in recognition of their religious standing. This one presents the familiar grammar of the archipelago's great churches: a broad ordered facade, a bell tower set beside it, a wide nave designed for large congregations, and an altar arranged around the image that draws pilgrims from far beyond the parish. Around it, the rhythm of the liturgical year structures the life of the town, culminating in the feasts that fill the surrounding streets with processions, music and light. The programme films the building in its setting, attentive to the way stone, timber and devotion have been maintained together over generations, and to what a basilica represents in a country where the parish church remains the centre of civic as well as spiritual life. No claim is made here beyond what the place itself shows.
