ベルナルディン教会と修道院(リヴィウ)

ベルナルディン教会と修道院(リヴィウ)

The Bernardine complex is one of the defining set pieces of Lviv's historic centre, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for the way it preserves the meeting of Central European, Mediterranean and Eastern traditions. Church, monastery and defensive walls were conceived as a single fortified island at the edge of the medieval town, and the arrangement still reads on the ground: a walled enclosure, a gate, a free-standing bell tower and, dominating everything, the church front. That facade is the complex's signature — an ordered Renaissance-Mannerist composition of pilasters and niches that resolves at its summit into a swirling Baroque gable, as though two centuries of taste had been stacked one above the other. Inside, dark carved woodwork, gilded altars and painted vaults create the theatrical interior of a preaching order. The site has passed between religious communities and civil uses across its long history and today serves a Greek Catholic congregation. Filmed in 4K, the programme sets the architecture within the wider fabric of a city that survived the twentieth century largely intact.
