ダイトンラム寺

ダイトンラム寺

Dai Tong Lam belongs to a different category from the small neighbourhood pagoda. It is a monastic complex on a large scale, a centre of formation in southern Vietnam where communities of monks and nuns study, train and gather for major ceremonies, and its architecture is sized accordingly: broad approaches, wide open courtyards that fill for festivals and stand empty between them, and halls whose interiors are built to hold hundreds. The most photographed feature is the statuary — long ranks of standing figures set out in the open, aligned across the ground so that the eye reads them as an architectural element rather than as individual sculptures. The film uses that geometry directly, alternating aerial views of the layout with observation at ground level: the sweeping of the courtyards, the preparation of offerings, the movement of robed communities between buildings, the chanting that fills the main hall. It offers programmers an accessible way into the institutional life of Vietnamese Buddhism, beyond the picturesque single temple.
