Dong Xuan is where the Old Quarter's thousands of small shops go to restock. Established under French administration at the northern end of Hanoi's historic trading streets, the market has been rebuilt since a fire in the 1990s, but it kept the arched frontage that makes it instantly recognisable and the function it has always had: wholesale supply for a city of retailers. Inside, the floors are stacked by category — fabric and clothing, household goods, dried foods, hardware, toys — in aisles so narrow that two people pass sideways, while porters move bales through the crowd with practised indifference. The market operates on its own clock, beginning long before dawn with deliveries in the surrounding streets and ending with the night food stalls that occupy the square outside. The film follows that cycle across a full day, treating the building as an organism and its traders as its protagonists.
