Saint George's Island, Perast and Risan

Saint George's Island, Perast and Risan

This programme follows the northern arm of the Bay of Kotor through three linked sites. Off Perast lie two islets, one of them crowned by the church and cypresses of Saint George, the other by its famous neighbouring sanctuary — a pairing that has fixed the image of the bay in painting and photography for generations. Perast itself is a single street of stone palaces facing the water, built with the fortunes of captains and shipowners in the era when local seafarers served the fleets of the Adriatic and beyond; its bell tower and waterfront remain remarkably intact. Further inland, Risan represents a far older layer: a settlement of antiquity whose excavated Roman villa preserves floor mosaics of exceptional quality. Together the three sites trace the bay's history from the classical world to Baroque maritime wealth. Filmed in 4K with extensive aerial coverage of the islets and the fjord-like inlet.
