Mar Elias occupies a strategic point on the ancient road linking Jerusalem to Bethlehem, at the crest from which travellers have traditionally caught their first sight of one city or the other. The Greek Orthodox monastery there is dedicated to the prophet Elijah, whose memory is attached to the site, and its heavy stone construction — thick walls, small windows, a compact plan — reflects centuries of standing exposed on an open ridge along a route that has been anything but peaceful. Inside, the church holds an Orthodox interior of icons, lamps and painted panels, and the monastery has served for generations as a stopping place for pilgrims walking between the two towns. The film reads the building through its position: the road, the terraced fields and olive groves, the view opening in both directions, and the way a single monastery came to mark the boundary of two of the most visited places on earth. It also records the daily life of a house that continues to function while the modern city has grown to its walls.
