建長寺 ― 鎌倉最初の禅寺

建長寺 ― 鎌倉最初の禅寺

Kencho-ji stands at the head of the Kamakura Gozan, the five great Zen monasteries of Japan's first warrior capital. It was established under the patronage of the Hojo regents and entrusted to a Chinese Chan master, and it was conceived from the outset not as a private chapel but as a training monastery on the continental model. That intention is legible in the plan: main gate, Buddha hall, dharma hall and abbot's quarters aligned on a single axis, a layout imported from Chinese Chan practice and unusual in Japan. The film follows that axis through the towering Sanmon gate, past ancient junipers in the forecourt, into halls where ceremonial and daily monastic routine still take place, and out to the garden behind the abbot's quarters. Wooded hills close the valley, and paths climb to viewpoints above the temple roofs. Filmed in 4K across the seasons, it offers a rigorous portrait of Zen architecture and practice.
