Montmayeur Castle, Aosta Valley

Montmayeur Castle, Aosta Valley

To reach Montmayeur you leave the valley floor and climb: woods, meadows, dry-stone walls, and then the mass of the castle against the ridge line. Like the many other strongholds of the Aosta Valley, it was raised where geography allowed a family to watch and to hold — a rock, a slope, a view over the road that leads towards the Alpine passes. Its distance from the modern road has preserved something rare: silence, and a setting almost unchanged. The programme takes the castle as both architecture and landscape, filming the fabric of its walls, the way stone was quarried and laid on a steep site, and the mountains that surround it through changing light and weather. Filmed in 4K with aerial coverage, it offers an image of the feudal Alps at their most elemental — a fortress, a mountain, and the long history of a valley that had to be defended.
